Tournament Rules

For Singles:

1. Domino players of either sex and of legal age are allowed to participate. If an error is committed in the recording of data, the matches will be played exactly how they were indicated to the participants.
2. The tournament will be carried out according to the Swiss system (1 vs. 2 and 3 vs. 4).
3. The match is won with 100 points.  The director of the tournament, with no previous notice, can indicate the judges to collect the ballots of the participants that have not finished in 30 minutes and within the last two matches.  If time is up, the participants that accumulated the most points will win.
4. In order to begin the match, all dominoes are shuffled and each player picks one tile. Its value is determined by adding its two sides. The player whose tile has the highest value is the starting player. Turn taking will be counter-clockwise.  All dominoes are shuffled by any of the 4 players; the shuffling player will pick his/her tiles last.
5. If the match is initiated by a domino piece of two values, the side with the highest value will point towards his/her partner. Turn taking will rotate to the right, in other words each player gets one turn.
6. Hands should remain under the table until it is one’s turn.
7. All players must be facing toward the center of the table during each match.
8. One point will be disputed in each match.  In case of a tie, nobody will acquire points and the rotation continues.
9. Final scores will consist of the points accumulated during each match. If there were to be a tie of final scores, and a decision is needed in order to continue to further confrontations, the winner will be the participant with the best differential.  The second criteria for determining a decision to get rid of a tie, is the result amongst them.
10. If a participant does not have a tile that can be played, the participant should say, “pass”.  If a player passes his/her turn, having a tile which can be legally played, the participant will be penalized with a point from his/her personal score, in other words the participant forfeits the game.   If the tile is the player’s last one, the penalty will not be taken into effect.  If, by petition of the other participants, the match continues the sanction will not be carried out.  If the participant “passes” deliberately in order to prevent a lock, the whole match will be lost.
11. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited.
12. Eating, drinking, or smoking is not allowed during each match.
13. If a tile is accidentally flipped and displayed to the participants during the shuffle or while, a participant is acquiring his/her tile, the shuffle will be repeated. If a player takes more than 7 tiles and views them, the shuffle will be repeated as well.  In addition, if the player did not get a view of the tiles, the player that is missing one or two pieces will acquire them from the player that has extra ones.
14. If a tile accidentally flips, it should remain on the table facing up and will be played at the first opportunity, leaving the player with no option except for a possible lock or closing.    When a player has only one tile left and is accidentally flipped, it should remain face up on the table, as well. The player whose tile flipped can win the match if there was no change in course, otherwise the match will be annulled.
15. If a player touches a tile, it must be played.  If the tile does not fit, it must be placed face up on the table and played at the first possible opportunity.
16. If during the course of a match the score is needed in order to make a decision, only the player whose turn it is can state the word, “score”.  The person in charge of the scoring will reveal the information.
17. “False thinking” or “False passing” can be penalized at the moment they are committed or at the end of the match, depending on the moment the violation is detected.  If a player recognizes he/she is “false thinking” and apologizes at the moment or within 3 seconds he/she can avoid the infraction.  If that is not the case, the player will be not penalized with a point from his/her own personal score.  The penalty for “false thinking” will be applied if the other three players agree that a violation was committed. The partner of the player that committed the infraction will be penalized under any circumstance.  If the violation is not detected on time, if possible the match will restart.  When you place a tile that cant be legally played, penalty can only be applied if the tile was played; otherwise, the tile must be left facing up and the 13 point criterion will be applied.   If the tile was placed on the wrong side and the player or his/her partner recognize the mistake before the person who is next has played or passed, they will not be penalized and the other players will decide if the match continues or not, beginning with the player in turn.
18. Sanctions can only be applied the tournament judges.  If a player decides to protest any action, he/she should call upon the judge to decide whether an action should be penalized and do so accordingly.  The judge has the right to apply sanctions independently during the tournament when he/she believes there is a violation to any of the rules.
19. If a player turns his/her tiles around, thinking the game is locked when it actually is not, the player will be penalized with 50 points from his/her differential score and the match will continue.  In addition, the player is not allowed to win the match.
20. The purpose of the Domino Federation of the Mexican Republic is to carry out competitions that are noble and honest.  For this reason, moral quality and integrity are an indispensable requirement for all participants.  Participants are expected to have a proper attitude without discussions, including improper allegations, inadequate language, and/or throwing the tiles improperly at the table.  Dark glasses are not allowed.  Above all, it is strictly prohibited to signal other participants or any other type of communication during the match.
21. Any situation not listed here will be resolved by the judges of the tournament and their final decision cannot be appealed.
22. The Organizing Committee reserves their right to admission and the judges are fully capacitated to suspend any participant that alters the order of events.
23. The suspended participant will lose all of his/her rights.
24. Out of respect for all of the participants’ time, there is only a 10-minute tolerance for each match to initiate.  The participants that are not present at the time agreed will lose 25 points for each 5 minutes they are late.
25. No substitutes are allowed under any motive.  The director of the tournament will resolve this matter.
